Bullies Allegedly Took Pictures of Middle School Girl In ICU After Suicide Attempt

Kelaia Turner, who was 12 at the time of the suicide attempt, spent 101 days in the hospital after hanging herself last year.

A 14-year-old girl's parents have sued her South Carolina middle school and other defendants, alleging that their bullying allegations were not addressed, according to People.

The teenage girl, Kelaia Turner, suffers from severe brain damage after a March 2023 suicide attempt, where she hanged herself with a belt in her bedroom for 8 minutes and is currently receiving care from her parents. They have sued Greenville County Schools, in addition to Kelaia’s teacher, Olivia Bennett, and other administrators, accusing the educators of failing to adequately respond to urgency about their daughter being bullied and harassed.

According to the GoFundMe page, her mother, Ty Turner, established that Kelaia spent 101 days in the hospital, including 31 days in the intensive care unit. In the lawsuit, it was alleged that one of Kelaia’s bullies came to the ICU, where pictures were taken and posted on social media, where rumors were made about her health. Ty is pursuing justice and accusing the district of neglecting her daughter and permitting the bullying to continue unchecked for a year and a half. Kelaia now requires total care, is nonverbal, and is on a tracheostomy and feeding tube.

“On Friday, December 17, 2021, fellow students were calling her a man and roach in Olivia Bennett’s class,” reads the complaint. “Ms. Bennett was complicit in the bullying and said nothing to the other students to stop it. One student asked, ‘Where’s the roach?’ and Ms. Bennett pointed to [Kelaia].”

According to the complaint, another classroom's students allegedly "played a song and video on YouTube called 'The Black People Song'” to the disregard of another teacher, Defendant Teer.

Greenville County Schools has since denied the allegations, maintaining that its personnel appropriately handle instances of bullying.

“We disagree with these allegations and have conducted a thorough investigation and review of each allegation at the time they were made,” the district said in a statement, per WYFF 4.
